The City of Plymouth
Plymouth is the largest city in the county of Devon in South West England. It is situated between the mouths of the rivers Plym and Tamar, at the head of one of Europe's largest natural harbours, Plymouth Sound.Plymouth has a rich maritime past and is one of the most important Royal Navy bases in the United Kingdom, which made it a prime target of the Luftwaffe during World War II. The long term decline of these industries has seen a greater diversification towards a service based economy based on healthcare, food and drink, chewing gum and call centres with electronics, advanced engineering and boat building still maintaining a prime role.

The Plymouth tourist office used to market the city under the slogan "Spirit of Discovery", a reference to the British seafarers and others who have set out from Plymouth to distant or uncharted areas of the world.Significant regeneration has occurred in the last five years with the construction and opening of Drake Circus Shopping Centre, built on the site of an earlier shopping arcade in the retail zone's north-western corner.
